Laura Nell Whelchel McClatchey Workman of Chickamauga died Thursday, Dec. 21, in Fort Oglethorpe. She was 94.
Nellie, as she was known, the fourth of seven children was born to Eston V. and Laura Jones Whelchel in Red Belt on Dec. 8, 1912. When she was a small child the family moved to Chickamauga, where she attended elementary school and then graduated from Chickamauga High School as class valedictorian. After high school she enjoyed studying at Georgia State College for Women one summer but decided to take a secretarial program at Edmondson School of Business in Chattanooga.
Upon graduation, she was employed by Crystal Springs Bleachery in Chickamauga where she worked for more than 40 years. A much valued employee, she was credit manager and secretary for the vice president there. A lifetime member of Elizabeth Lee United Methodist Church in Chickamauga, she sang in the choir much of her adult life, was a loyal and dedi-cated member of the Marjorie Jewel Sunday school class for many years (and its oldest member), and was very active in the United Methodist Women. She was several times presi-dent of the local group and served for two years as president of the district UMW. In this capacity she enjoyed attending regional and state meetings, where she met and worked with women from throughout the state.
Though she had no children of her own, she delighted in young people; she and her first husband, William J. McClatchey, welcomed his younger brother Bob into their home so that he could attend high school in Chickamauga. She took great interest in her many nieces and nephews and played an especially important role in the lives of Kate, Marianne and Robert, the children of her brother Edward and his wife Mary Emily, who lived in Chickamauga. She will be remembered by many for her love of music. As a child she taught herself to play the piano by ear and throughout her life shared her talent with relatives and friends, who loved listening and singing as she played. Until her last illness she frequently played for her friends at the Chickamauga Older American Center, which she attended almost daily for some 30 years. Her friends at the Center were a very important part of her life.
An avid gardener, she raised a great variety of vegetables and fruit almost every summer and took pleasure in sharing with family and neighbors. Even in her last years she continued taking turnip greens and tomatoes to give to others at the Center. She and her second hus-band, Charles Workman, a retired grocer, were very active in the Chickamauga Food Pantry. Throughout her life she gave generously of her energy, time and talents to her community, her church and her family and friends.
