Asa Albritton, a senior at Ringgold High School, was selected to be a member of the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band.

Albritton, an accomplished tuba player, will join an elite group of 125 musicians and color guard members in a performance during halftime of the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

Held in the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, the game will be televised live on NBC on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 1 p.m. EST. Albritton will be playing the sousaphone for the All-American Band.

Albritton was honored Nov. 8 with a presentation ceremony held in the Ringgold High School gymnasium. Robin Christian, Ringgold High School band director, nominated Albritton and was present for the event.

"The best part of my job is not just teaching and being with the kids, but meeting the families as well," Christian said. "I appreciate how dedicated these families are to helping their children succeed. I know Asa has made his family proud, and I want to take this time to tell his parents that it has been an honor to have their son in my band."

Tracy Wright, Ringgold Middle School band director, also had words of praise for Albritton.

"This is a fine young man," Wright said. "No matter what he does, whether it's band or being an Eagle Scout or Governor's Honors, he's a hard worker. He always works very diligently and shows incredible attention to detail. He deserves this honor."

Other honors and activities for Albritton include being second lieutenant and tuba section leader in the Ringgold Tiger Marching Band, district 7 Honor Band (4 times) and Georgia All State Band (2 times.) He was selected to Governor's Honors School, awarded a Georgia Certificate of Merit, is a member of Beta Club and National Honor Society and is an Eagle Scout.

Albritton thanked his family, superintendent Denia Reece, principal Sharon Vaughn and the Ringgold band directors. He also offered credit to former Ringgold band student Evan Brock, who was previously selected for the 2012 Army band.

"This is such an honor," Albritton said. "I really appreciate all the support from my friends and my family. I want to thank Evan Brock, the first All-American student selected from Ringgold, who was an inspiration to me, and I want to say thank you to Mr. Christian and Mr. Wright. Without them, I would not be here today. I owe it all to them."

For more than twelve years, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl has been a national premier high school football game, serving as the preeminent launching pad for America’s future college and NFL stars. Adrian Peterson, Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Ndamukong Suh, Marcus Lattimore and Andrew Luck all made their national debuts as U.S. Army All-Americans.

In the 2012 NFL draft Andrew Luck became the first U.S. Army All-American Bowl alumnus to be selected with the first overall pick. The 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl drew a crowd of 39,011 to the Alamodome and was the most-watched sporting event on television over the weekend, excluding the NFL playoffs.

John Myers, Army director of marketing research, spoke highly of the band chosen to perform at the prestigious bowl game.

"The U.S. Army has a distinguished musical history,” Myers said. “The skills and strengths necessary to be a successful band member are mirrored in Army strong soldiers. Only the strongest wear the Army colors, which is why we are proud to honor all of our 2013 U.S. Army All-American Band members and congratulate each of them on their selection.”
