Ringgold police arrested two people and seized more than $100,000 in cash early Sunday morning following a traffic stop along I-75.

According to police chief Dan Bilbrey, the stop occurred about 2 a.m. Cash, drug paraphernalia, and multiple electronic devices were confiscated.

Jesse Robinson, 22, and Terrence Hunt, 29, both of San Francisco, were booked around 5 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 16.

Robinson is being charged with possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, and speeding, while Hunt is being charged with conspiracy to purchase/possess a controlled substance, and permitting a person to violate.

Both offenders are in custody at the Catoosa County jail with no bond set at this time.

Bilbrey said both suspects have prior drug convictions.

“One of our officers observed a vehicle driving erratically and speeding early this morning, which prompted a traffic stop,” Bilbrey said. “After initiating the stop, the officer detected oddities, or inconsistencies if you will, in the stories that the driver and passenger were giving.”

The duo was traveling in a 2012 Kia Sorento SUV that was registered to Hunt, the passenger.

“Robinson was then placed under arrest for reckless driving and speeding, while Hunt was charged with permitting a person to violate since he was allowing the actions to take place in the vehicle that was rented in his name,” Bilbrey said.

Both men were taken to the Catoosa County jail without incident.

A search of the vehicle revealed the two offenders were on more than just a Sunday drive.

“As a result of an administrative search that took place while the vehicle was being confiscated, we uncovered two backpacks that all in all contained over $100,000 in U.S. currency,” Bilbrey said. “We then obtained a search warrant and checked the vehicle thoroughly.”

Bilbrey says officers found drug remnants, multiple cell phones, travel brochures, and a digital scale.

“We found residue within the vehicle believed to be linked to marijuana,” Bilbrey said. When field tested, the residue tested presumptive positive for the presence of marijuana.”

Bilbrey said the offenders were passing through from Nashville, Tenn., but had a hankering for more lavish destinations.

“We found out that the suspects had recently returned from a trip to Hawaii and had plans to head towards Las Vegas later this week,” Bilbrey said.

With the investigation ongoing, it's uncertain at this time whether the duo will face additional charges.

“The case is under further investigation at this time, but any other charges would be drug-related, as it pertains to the distribution of narcotics,” Bilbrey said.

“We appreciate the help we received from the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office during this incident,” Bilbrey said.
