The Chattanooga Mocs accepted Andrew Houts as a walk-on this summer head coach John Shulman announced Wednesday. Houts (5-10, 170) played for Chattanooga State Community College last season. He is one of the most prolific scorers in Georgia high school history.

From nearby Trenton and an alum of Dade County High School, Houts scored nearly 2,500 points in his prep career. He averaged 27 points per game as a senior after a junior campaign posting 24 points per contest. He holds the Georgia high school record for three-pointers made with 402 in his career.

“We are excited Andrew has chosen to join our basketball team,” Shulman stated. “He can play and he has great character. Andrew has two years of college experience which will help our young team.

“He can absolutely shoot the ball as well as anyone in the country,” Shulman continued. “He is a competitor and would have to be growing up in that household.”

Houts is the younger brother of former University of Georgia star Ashley, and former Lady Mocs guard Emily. Ashley was high school All-American, a 1,000-point scorer at UGA and a second-round WNBA draft pick of the New York Liberty.

Andrew was a two-time first-team All-State selection at Dade County while playing for Coach Glen Hicks. His junior and senior seasons, he was also honored as the Chattanooga Times Free Press “Best of Preps” Player of the Year for North Georgia. The Wolverines won more than 70 games in his final three seasons.

He began his career at Columbus State, an NCAA Division II program in Columbus, Ga. He started in six of his 21 appearances, averaging 5.9 points and 1.4 assists per game.

Houts played 2011-12 for former Tennessee guard Jay Price at Chattanooga State. He averaged 13.5 points and 1.5 steals per contest, shooting 38.5 percent from three-point range, making 2.8 per game. He shot 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Houts’ high of 31 points came against Vol State making seven three-pointers. He scored 22 points twice in matchups with Columbia State and Walters State.

“Andrew made this decision well before Dontay (Hampton) was injured, we just couldn’t announce it per NCAA regulations,” Shulman added. “He will have to play some point for us while Tay is out. It is a good opportunity for him.

“He is extremely well-coached and we are very excited he has joined our family.”
