A Ringgold man earned a host of charges during a traffic stop after, police say, he was driving drunk and re-sisted arrest while his infant son was in the back seat.

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

Matthew Logan Ryan, 24, of Isaiah Lane in Ringgold was arrested Tuesday, April 17, for interference with government property, five counts of obstruction or hindering law enforcement officers, disorderly conduct, driving un-der the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI), child endangerment by driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, suspended registration, driving without a license on person, open container and weaving. He is also being held for the Walker County Sheriff’s Office. Ryan’s bond has been set at $14,400.

The incident began with a routine traffic stop on LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe after an officer witnessed Ryan fail to slow down following a change in the speed limit, reports show.

“Upon making contact with the suspect, I could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the interior of the vehicle,” officer James Clark wrote in the report. “I also noticed the suspect’s speech to be slurred with his eyes watery and red. I also noticed that there was a juvenile child in a safety seat in the rear seat of the vehicle, and an open can of beer laying just to the right side of the drive shaft in the rear floorboard area.”

Ryan had difficulty retrieving his vehicle information and identification from his wallet, and failed field sobri-ety tests that were administered at the scene, at which time he began arguing with officers and failing to cooperate, reports show.

“I asked the suspect to have a seat in the back of my patrol car, at which time he began to argue with me and re-fused to sit down,” Clark said. “He then began to demand to re-take the field sobriety tests.”

Additional officers arrived on the scene to assist with the situation, reports show.

“It took four officers to control the suspect and place him in the back seat as he resisted,” Clark said. “Once in the back seat, the suspect began hitting his head on the left rear side window.”

After being placed in the back seat, Ryan was able to release the seatbelt latch, at which time he began hitting his head again, causing the rear window to be knocked out of its track, reports show.

“As the suspect refused to comply, he was taken to the ground and restrained in leg irons,” Clark said. “Once re-turned to the back seat of the patrol car, the suspect continued to hit his head, curse, and yell.”

Contact was then made with Ryan’s wife and mother who arrived at the scene, reports show.

“The child was found to be wearing only a dirty diaper in the car seat,” Clark said. “Officers Cannon and Ferger-son cared for the child, changing the diaper and clothing him prior to the mother and wife arriving on the scene.”
