Chickamauga voters were waiting at the door today as the Chickamauga Civic Center opened at 7 a.m. for election day.

Rainy weather slowed the consistent trickle of voters for a short while, according to Richard Barclift, supervisor of elections for the Chickamauga precinct.

About 900 people from the Chickamauga precinct cast ballots early – that is, before today. The precinct has 5,400 registered voters.

As of 1 p.m. today, another 493 had visited the Chickamauga voting site to cast ballots in person.

That means that, as of 1 p.m. today, a total of 1,393 people in the Chickamauga precinct had cast ballots, for a voter turnout so far of about 26 percent.

A random polling of 40 voters exiting the site revealed that the most important race to Chickamauga citizens is the commissioner’s seat, by 40 percent of those surveyed.

The sheriff’s race followed a close second with nearly one-third of those polled during a one-hour period.

One question on the ballot that surprised a few voters asked if voters supported casino gambling if the funds were to be used for education.
