After 22 years, Catoosa County will have a new sheriff, but a familiar face to deputies.

After Tuesday’s Republican runoff, Gary Sisk has, for all intents, been elected the county's top lawman, succeeding retiring sheriff Phil Summers.

Sisk is expected to face a write-in candidate in the general election in November, but election observers are predicting he will easily win that race.

Sisk will become the first person other than Summers to hold the office since 1990. This marks the first time a Republican has held the office in decades. No Democrats are running for the post.

In Tuesday’s runoff, Sisk's vote total was 4,045 compared to opponent Larry Black's 3,340. These totals still face official certification.

Sisk carried eight of 12 precincts: Fort Oglethorpe, Graysville, Poplar Springs, Boynton, Duncan Park, Lakeview, Westside, and Chambers.

The two ended up in the run-off election after they finished as the top vote-getters in the general primary election on July 31. In that election Black garnered 3,808 voles to Sisk's 1,956, which makes Sisk’s win Tuesday a big upset.

Sisk said Tuesday night after the votes were tallied, “We are ecstatic about the support from county residents and my constituents. I look forward to serving the county with honor, dignity and integrity.”

To his supporters, Sisk said, “Thank you for believing in me and all the support you gave me. It is apparently God's will that I serve Catoosa County as its next sheriff.”

Sisk, a major with the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office, is the chief deputy to sheriff Phil Summers and a 22-year veteran of the department. Summers publicly endorsed Sisk after the July 31 general primary election.

Black served as commander of the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force, a position he had held since January 2008 until he decided to run for the sheriff’s post. He also served as police chief for Fort Oglethorpe from June 2006 to January 2008.

Sisk is a life-long resident of Catoosa County and is a married father. He is a graduate of Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe High School. He and his family attend Peavine Baptist Church. His wife has also served as a deputy.

Sisk brings his 21 years of sheriff's department experience to the job. Most notable is his 10 years as a member of the command staff at the department.

At the beginning of the race for sheriff, Sisk said, “I've never considered a life in politics, and by no means does my candidacy make me a career politician, but running for sheriff is something I have given some thought to over the past several years, and I feel that this is the path I am being led down at this point in my life.”

Its my opinion that it speaks volumes about Larry Black that as of now he hasn't given a public statement about his loss and congratulated Mr Sisk on his win. It seems Mr Black never fooled the majority.

Larry, thats how we do it in America, just like we don't vote for a man that doesn't support all of our rights.

If you'll check WRCB's site you will see an interview in which Larry Black conceded and wished Gary Sisk well with hopes of him doing well as sheriff. In my opinion that makes Larry Black a fine American who is not trying to fool anyone, and as for you it speaks volumes about your ability to do your homework before you slam someone.

According to information in this paper, there are 40605 registered voters in Catoosa County. I don't know how many are registered as Republicans. 7385 voters (per this paper) took part in the runoff primary election yesterday, August 21, 2012. That's less than 20% of Catoosa County voters. Want a voice in choosing the next Sheriff? Vote in November....

We also had a low turn out for the Primary.

If I'm not mistaken there were more in the run-off than the primary

I was under the impression that everyone registered to vote in the county got to participate in electing the sheriff. Despite there not being a democratic challenger, and with a possible independent challenger still being verified, I was turned away from voting when I stated I was an independent. While I understand the concept of why this law exist, it doesn't seem to be the correct use if there are only candidates of the same party running.

I believe y'all are what is referred to as sore losers.

Yesterday when I voted in Graysville I saw Larry Black supporters breaking the law by standing with their signs at the entrance to the property. Like Black, they seemed to think the laws we have are for everyone else, certainly not them.

Not a sore loser, I just know how things have been for the last four to five years at the sheriffs office. I really hope I am wrong and all goes well, but I'm not very optimistic about it. As far as the sign holders, there is a law against politics within so many feet from the entrance of the building. I'm sure they were well outside that distance. If you drove by the other polls you would have seen the same for Sisk supporters. They were all, both side, well outside the limits or they would have been moved.

Wow Tom Sawyer, you are what I would refer to as a person with so little intelligence that he posts comments without the documents or truth to back them up. Wait, is your real name Sisk? I will say that Gary was gracious enough to thank Phil Summers for his last minute support which gave his campaign the push it needed...(his words)...in other words, thanks Phil for using your influence to get my loosing campaign votes cause they were really voting for you. And, I passed by those same Sisk supporters trying to get in to vote, thank you for pointing out that Sisk's wife, a deputy in CC broke the law, cause she was one of them. The fact is we are stuck with a person for four years who cares little about his employees, creates a hostile work environment because of his favoritism, allows some deputies and people to break the law because they are friends, and turns his head when certain deputies are complained on by numerous women who admit to having sex with them while they are on the job, in uniform. If you want to bad mouth a candidate, make sure your choice is clean.

Catoosa County knows not what they have done. The Sheriffs Office will suffer greatly and as a result so will the residents of this county, for four years. It's too late to change things. I just hope those of you who voted for Sisk can live with your decision.

I agree with you, except some of us know what we can expect! I am just confused as to why Phil Summers didn't just run again instead of winning the race for such an incompetent person.
