A Chattanooga man accumulated multiple charges after he allegedly drove through a police safety checkpoint in Fort Oglethorpe and ignored commands to stop while driving DUI

According to the Fort Oglethorpe Police Department:

Jeremy Scott Eaves, 33, of Ashfrod Drive in Chattanooga, Tenn., was arrested on Sunday, Oct. 7, on charges of DUI, failure to obey persons directing traffic, and failure to maintain lane.

The incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. on Oct. 7 while police were conducting a safety check at an intersection along U.S. 41.

“(Eaves) approached our location, and after being directed to stop by two different officers, he increased his speed and drove through the location,” officer Michael Cannon said. “He then continued southbound on Highway 41 driving in the center of both lanes.”

Officer Cannon followed and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, with Eaves allegedly continuing to drive about a half-mile down the road before stopping his vehicle, reports show.

“When I approached the vehicle, I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from inside,” Cannon said. “I asked Mr. Eaves if he had been drinking, and he advised that he had drank two beers.”

Eaves then had continuous trouble collecting himself for questioning, reports show.

“When he exited the vehicle, he failed to place it into gear and the vehicle began rolling backwards nearly striking my patrol car,” Cannon said. “Mr. Eaves was very unsteady on his feet and had to be caught numerous times. I asked him why he did not stop at the road check, and he advised that he did not know that there was a road check.”

Eaves was then given a field sobriety test, which he failed.

As much as I hate checkpoints, I guess this one actually could have saved lives that night from this waste of skin.
